Strength training improves vascular function in young black men

Dec. 21, 2012 ? Six weeks of weight training can significantly improve blood markers of cardiovascular health in young African-American men, researchers report in the Journal of Human Hypertension.

The researchers measured blood markers associated with inflammation, immune response or the remodeling of arteries that normally occur after tissue damage, infection or other types of stress. They found that levels of two of these markers dropped significantly in African-American men but not in Caucasian men after six weeks of resistance training.

"This suggests that resistance exercise training is more beneficial in young African-American men than in Caucasian men of the same age," said Bo Fernhall, the dean of the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Fernhall led the study as a professor in the department of kinesiology and community health at the Urbana-Champaign campus. The 14 African-American and 18 Caucasian study subjects were matched for body mass index, cardiovascular fitness and age. None had previously been trained in endurance or resistance exercise.

African-Americans are known to have higher rates of cardiovascular disease than Caucasians, Fernhall said. In particular, "hypertension, stroke and kidney disease are much, much higher in the African-American population," he said.

Some of these problems start young.

"Higher blood pressures in African-American children have been shown as young as 8 to 10 years of age," Fernhall said. "So there's obviously something going on that predisposes the African-American population to end stage disease, hypertension and stroke and the more debilitating diseases later on in life."

A previous study led by Fernhall and his doctoral student Kevin Heffernan (an author on the new paper as well) found that resistance training reduced levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the blood of African-American, but not Caucasian, men. This protein is a reliable marker of systemic inflammation. Levels of CRP rise after injury or infection, and chronically elevated levels are sometimes associated with heart disease and cancer.

The new study looked at other markers that could signal trouble in the arteries: MMPs, which help remodel blood vessels after injury or infection; and 8-isoprostane, a marker of oxidative stress involving chemically charged ions or molecules called reactive oxygen species. Both markers went down in the African-Americans, but not the Caucasians, after resistance training. The researchers were surprised to see that initial levels of MMP-9 were lower in African-Americans before the weight training.

"It may be that MMP-9 has a different effect on the vasculature of African-Americans than it does on Caucasians," said Illinois doctoral student Marc Cook, who conducted the new analysis. "We don't know."

The decrease in MMP-9 was significantly correlated with the increase in muscle strength in the African-American men, Cook said. He sees the reduction in MMP-9s and 8-isoprostane as a positive outcome in the African-American men.

Previous studies showed that "aerobic exercise actually reduces oxidative stress, and reduces iosprostane," Cook said. "But nobody had a clue about resistance training."

Cook said he now knows what to say to African-American men who ask him why they should exercise.

"If you don't like cardiovascular exercise, if you don't like running on a treadmill, if you can't play basketball or you're not good at it, you can lift weights and improve your health, especially when it comes to high blood pressure, which happens to run in our family," he said. "If you just want to lift weights and you do it on a regular basis, you could improve your function."

"The overall goal of our departmental research here at the U. of I. is to explore the use of exercise as adjunct therapy for disease, while providing a public health message and evidence about how exercise is beneficial, even at an early age," said Illinois kinesiology and community health professor Jeffrey Woods, a co-author on the study.

This work was partially funded through the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.

In addition to the PD projects and initiatives coordinated by the SEA Assistive Technology team, itinerant resource teachers are also available to partner with Special Education Consultants to co-create/co-present at Family of Schools Special Education PD sessions. During these collaborations, the assistive technology itinerant teacher and the FOS consultant aim to provide teachers with meaningful information on available software, specific tools/features and the ways in which assistive technology can be successfully integrated as a means of promoting access to curriculum and student achievement.
This term, special education teachers of WR5 participated in a presentation on the new features of Read and Write Gold Version 10. The session provided MARTS, HSP, ISP and resource teachers with current information on the software advancements of Read and Write Gold and its applications within the classroom.

The Read and Write Gold Picture Dictionary can serve as an excellent tool for creating visual supports for visual learners, as well as students within the low-incidence and autism populations.

Read and Write Gold?s Vocabulary List Builder is a tool for building vocabulary specific to a particular unit/area of study. Vocabulary charts can be digitally edited, saved and printed in order to serve as a quick reference guide to support students during subsequent written/oral tasks.

Immigration Clearinghouse - Controlled Demolition of the United ...

by William Gheen
President of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC)
www.alipac.us

This is it. This is not a drill. The globalists who have compromised the top tiers of America?s media and government superstructure are going for broke with their plan which has been in the making for many years.

Speaking of broke, they are broke. The entire political system responsible for governing us and protecting us should have ceased to financially exist long before now as they are out of money again. They no longer have the money to pay their salaries, their staff, or the light bill for the White House. Even though they just doubled the national debt in slightly more than a year, they have spent all of that already.

Just as the math of the global financial apocalypse unwinds, this same unfunded mandate of a government is trying to pass Amnesty for illegal aliens by trying to compromise the first two protections of the Bill of Rights and the US Constitution. Does this surprise any of our long standing supporters?

After the 2008 elections, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) tried to warn the nation that we had to fight against the ?Three Nation Killers? to make it to the 2010 elections. We fought those three nation killers successfully giving the public another chance, but the 2010 political revolution was stalled west of the Mississippi river by large numbers of illegal alien voters who kept Senator Harry Reid and the Democrats in control of the US Senate.

Please remember that it was ALIPAC that warned Americans first about the three prongs of this nation destroying cabal?s plans which you now see manifesting all around you at once. We predicted this and now you should be able to see it clearly.

The three ?Nation Killers? that the globalists want in place in order to bury traditional America beneath their new super state that will fall under global control are: 1. Amnesty for over ten million illegal aliens in America; 2. Restrictions on freedom of speech to prevent future grassroots political rebellions against their plans and rule; 3. Gun bans and confiscation to assure that the American public is defenseless to fight any future atrocities, enslavement, or whatever they decide they want to do to the once free and self governed people of America.

There has now been a very small swing to the left in Congress, with Democrats picking up a whopping 8 seats in 2012 compared to the 60 seats the GOP gained with candidates coast to coast running hard against illegal immigration in 2010. Most of the gains by the globalists were achieved by skullduggery and redrawn district lines when they tried to destroy the people who were not under their control, like Michele Bachmann, Allen West, and Mike McIntyre. West fell as did several true patriots in California who were redistricted out of office by the elites. In ALIPAC?s home state of North Carolina, we helped save Mike McIntyre by a few hundred votes.

From what we can tell in the news reports being collected in our archives at www.ALIPAC.us, our runaway government will probably agree to double or quadruple the debt again to buy themselves another year or two of authority and making sure all the components are in place for their nation building to succeed.

Some of the first bills that will be filed and rushed will be for Amnesty for illegal aliens and restrictions of gun rights. Prohibitions on free speech on the web may be further legislated, or they may just crack down on us using Google and Facebook to remove speech they don?t like.

If you are one of our supporters on Facebook, please join our email alerts at www.ALIPAC.us because news has just reached us that Facebook has begun suspending accounts and deleting posts due to political content. InfoWars and others are reporting conservative bloggers who use Facebook are having their accounts shut down, or are receiving warnings from Facebook that their political views will not be allowed. Our ability to share information is under duress.

We need each of you to understand that this Amnesty fight is going to be very different. Do not expect to see honest coverage of what is happening on any of the major news networks, including Fox News.

While many of you have known for a long time that CNN, MSNBC, ABC, and CBS have all been singing the same pro Comprehensive Immigration Reform Amnesty supporting song for years, while excluding reports of illegal aliens killing Americans, taking jobs from Americans, and stealing taxpayer resources and election votes.

Now, Fox News has stopped having guests from ALIPAC, NumbersUSA, or FAIR on their show at all and many of their show hosts like Bill O?Reilly, Sean Hannity, Mike Huckabee, and Geraldo Rivera all support Amnesty for illegal aliens.

For the last two years, Fox News owner and notorious billionaire Rupert Murdoch has been working hand in hand with gun grabbing billionaire Michael Bloomberg to pass a form of Amnesty for illegal aliens. Now Fox News mirrors their owner?s bias on this issue.

So, in effect, those of us fighting for American citizen interests against this invasion have been almost completely silenced on the national networks. The elites know that many of our American citizens will not stand up or motivate unless they see or hear about it on TV. Some are just not motivated or just don?t believe anything real is happening, unless they see it on their TV. With Glenn Beck and Pat Buchanan off the TV now and Lou Dobbs converted to an Amnesty supporter, fired from CNN, and stuck in the back waters of Fox News, all of these who would oppose Amnesty have been silenced from our televisions as the elites prepare for this new assault on our nation.

On talk radio, Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage will stand against Amnesty. Sean Hannity whom we have always suspected as a globalist asset has shown his true colors and claims to have ?evolved? to the level of his boss Rupert Murdoch and now supports a ?path to citizenship? for illegal immigrants. The big companies have also restructured talk radio so many of the smaller shows run by local hosts are now off the air, replaced by Spanish language stations and broadcasting other content.

On top of preparing you for a steady stream of disinformation from the globalists on TV, you need to be prepared to see some of their ?deep assets? turn on you in the final days of this national betrayal. The globalists have had many people in their pockets, both Democrats and Republicans, and up to this point it has been advantageous for them to pretend they are loyal to you, the American public. Sean Hannity?s recent conversion to an illegal alien Amnesty supporter and Joe Scarborough?s 180 degrees on American gun rights are just the beginning. Prepare yourselves for disappointment as the elites expose their deep assets as they go for broke with their plan.

The good news for the side of American Defenders like us is A. We will now have better mapping of who all of the traitors are; and B. We can make a list and if we can defeat their plans once again, we can move forward to begin educating Americans about who truly represents We The People, the US Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, and who actually works for the billionaires engaged in what I call ?The Controlled Demolition of the United States of America!?

So you need to be prepared to motivate to defend America and our communications on the web, and if you are waiting for someone on TV to tell you to mobilize, it is just not going to happen. You will simply turn your TVs on one day to find that illegal aliens are on their way to becoming legal voters, your ability to own guns has been restricted, and new hate speech laws are going into place to prevent you from speaking out when future waves of illegal aliens push you and your descendants into the streets, swamps, and mountains.

Finally, we have to warn you about their propaganda. According to the recent letter from turncoat Congressman Ted Poe sent to the Amnesty supporting publication POLITICO, not only are deep assets for the globalists like Ted Poe are not really on the side of Americans who are facing off against illegal immigration, but instead, they are going to use three primary propaganda strategies, two of which we have seen already.

Strategy #1 ?It?s not Amnesty?

We have seen this first strategy before that Ted Poe and others are using. John McCain and George Bush swore up and down that their ?Guest Worker? plan to legalize millions of illegal aliens was not ?Amnesty.? They believed that they were so powerful with their friends in the media helping that they could actually change the definition of Amnesty just by saying so. In fact, these people announce on CNN and Fox News and say, ?My plan is not Amnesty,? and a certain percentage of Americans will say, ?Oh, I heard it was not Amnesty, I?ll go back to the home shopping network now.?

During recent calls to Ted Poe?s office, a few of our new ALIPAC supporters were told our alert to them about Ted Poe supporting Amnesty was ?disinformation,? and that he did not support Amnesty and even says in his letter he is against Amnesty. So, once again we find ourselves fighting that old strategy of the ?not an Amnesty? Amnesty.

Strategy #2 ?Hidden Amnesty Within Language You Like?

There is one small poison pill that America needs to swallow to slumber forevermore and it is a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens that would turn them into voters whom you will watch dominate American politics should we fail. While sellout Republicans will try to convince you that you have a lot in common with illegal immigrants. This is a lie ! You will not enjoy watching what they do to your country, your workplace if you still have one, and your neighborhood in the future.

Just like the Ted Poe letter to Politico shows us, they are going to bury the ?path to citizenship? poison pill Amnesty under lots of things you like to hear such as ?Secure the border first,? ?immigration reform,? and ?send the criminals home,? etc. The toy they want will be buried in a box of Cracker Jacks and you won?t see it unless you read the whole thing or look in the least read section of the letter (around the 75% mark) to see it.

While Ted Poe ordered his staffers to lie to our ALIPAC callers and claim that his plan was not Amnesty, their claims fell apart when some of our activists confronted them with the news that the path to citizenship was indeed in the letter. US Law states that illegal aliens currently in the US are prohibited from applying for citizenship unless they return home to apply first.

Poe?s letter states, ?Those (illegal aliens currently in the US) who receive documentation may eventually apply for citizenship, and those who have served in our military should be placed ahead of the line.? Obviously, this most important point of his plan that would change the law to accommodate 10-20 million illegal immigrants should be in the opening and closing of his letter. However, it is not, it?s only mentioned once in paragraph 4, sentence 7, immersed in other language you would like.

After all, that appears to be what Ted Poe is. He is a hidden traitor immersed in pro enforcement clothing. We checked today and NumbersUSA still has Ted Poe listed as an ?A? grade with full merits for ?Opposing Amnesty.? How long will that bit of fiction remain up on the web, and are all of the different illegal immigration fighting groups going to react as ALIPAC has to Poe?s betrayal? We hope to hear from the other groups about Poe soon, but for now ALIPAC will lead the way into the fray.

This is certainly a fight with Ted Poe that none of us wanted. We are aware of the impact it will have on the morale of our movement to see traitors like Ted Poe in our own ranks exposing themselves as assets of the globalists as the Amnesty trap is sprung.

Strategy #3 The New One: ?It?s not citizenship Amnesty?

The new strategy we face in 2012 from the Amnesty supporters is being presented by US Senator Marco Rubio, Congressman Ted Poe, and others.

They claim that their legislation will legalize illegal immigrants without conveying citizenship rights. To many Americans who are intimidated by the power of the elites and uncomfortable with their backs against the wall they will say, ?Well, I guess that sounds reasonable since they won?t be able to vote.?

Well, guess what?!?! Illegal aliens are already able to vote and voting! Many Americans apparently have not been reading the ALIPAC email alerts about the confirmation of illegal alien voters in many states!

Furthermore, we are quite certain that if you are a big enough sucker or desperate enough to swallow this promise that lifting the current penalties under law for illegal aliens will not lead to citizenship, then what you will get next will be all of the pro illegal alien groups immediately pushing for the vote.

Once you remove the current laws requiring deportation, they can take their sweet time with all the rest and they won?t stop. They will never stop. What will have changed is that you will never have a chance to peacefully get them out of America forevermore.

Also, you do not have to be a lawyer to know that the courts will not allow Congress to establish a permanent underclass by law.

Republicans like Rubio and Poe know that the courts will finish the Amnesty job they start, allowing them to confuse voters even more by coming out against what the courts do. These sellouts have met with their lobbyist handlers and true masters and created this plan we are seeing in several different locations at once.

Lie to Americans to assure them the illegal aliens will not become citizens like the 1986 Amnesty under Reagan accomplished, then let a few activist judges handle the rest. The elites do not care how they get to where they want to go, just that they get there.

One thing they certainly don?t care about is you. Your job, your life, your future. If we are lucky they just don?t care. If we are unlucky, these plans we face are meant to be our undoing and destruction.

In closing, the last time ALIPAC helped defeat Amnesty, they sent 4 US Senators out against us. It was McCain, Graham, Reid, and Durbin. We took Lindsey Graham off the negotiation table with Obama in 2010 sending their plans into disarray. Graham?s support fell to catastrophic levels after my speech at a South Carolina Tea Party rally heard coast to coast thanks to the mass media reaction. Now Graham is up for reelection and Fox News is helping rebuild his brand by appearing to be a fighter against Obama.

This time they are coming at us with 8 US Senators.

So it is clear that the globalists have regrouped after the defeats we have helped to hand them, and they are going for broke.

Please remember that our revolution will no longer be televised. They want Amnesty for illegals, along with your guns, and your free speech. The Amnesty components will be hidden! They plan to lie to you extensively, and bury the Amnesty within language of which you approve. Be prepared to fight the Amnesty that is not an Amnesty and the Amnesty that is not a path to citizenship. They will all lead to millions of illegal aliens permanently replacing you in American politics.

Be ready to stand up and fight harder than you ever have before. If the elites want America submerged and their new nation building to succeed, let?s force their hand into the open by preventing our lawmakers from rubber stamping their dirty deeds.

English Department Profile ? BHS Devil's Advocate

By Catherine Han

Students in Ms. Stuart class

Students in Ms. Stuart class

The English Department at Burlington High School wants to provide students with the ?best learning atmosphere, so there have been changes and will be future improvements within the department.

The English Department focus is to ?unify what we teach in our writing component, increase our grammatical study in grades 9 and 10, introducing new texts across all four years at BHS, and providing better support for students who request more assistance with reading and writing? stated Department Head Mr. Lally.

?

With a new school year, there is always a change. Mrs. Ford and Ms. Graham have returned from their maternity leave absences. Unfortunately, Mr. Field, a Public speaking and Creative Writing teacher, retired at the end of last year. After the long use of Word Wealth and the Sadlier Oxford books, this year freshmen are being introduced to an online vocabulary textbook. ???Also, the vocabulary textbook in in the process of being translated into an iTunes app was released called Exploros, and this text will be extended to the sophomore classes starting next year.

?

?????????Also, there has been a variety of books added to the core classes. Some of the books included are Hamilton?s Mythology ( gr 9), The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri (gr 10) and Travels With Charley by John Steinbeck and Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer (gr 11) as well as units on Media Literacy and Eastern European Fiction to our British and World Literature class (gr12).

The core courses offered at BHS is Introduction to Literature I during Freshmen year, Introduction to Literature II during Sophomore Year, American Literature or AP Language & Composition during Junior Year, and British and World Literature or AP Literature & Composition.

?

The English Department is the largest department at BHS. The Department itself has 16 teachers. Also, it is one of only two departments that requires all ?four full years to graduate. The first two years focus on a broad range of literary styles, with a greater stress on grammar and vocabulary acquisition, while the last two years are studies in American Literature during junior year, and British/World Literature during senior year.

There will be two new classes in January, Young Adult Fiction and Creative Writing: Poetry. The Creative Writing Course has existed at BHS for many years, but it has never had a class dedicated entirely to writing poetry.

If students want to focus their studies in the subject of English, they can take electives or clubs along with their current English course. The English electives and clubs offered here at BHS are Collab, Idle Hands, Poetry Club,Debate Team, Future Teachers of America, and Factahalon.

Collab is a national award-winning literary magazine published by the students of BHS, Idle Hands is BHS Improv Club, Poetry Club is where students can make poems and recite them, Debate Team is where students prepare for and participate in formal competitive debates and sponsors forums and open discussion to the student body, Future Teachers of America is where students explore careers in education , and Factahalon is where volunteer students make teams of four to compete, using a quiz show format.

The upcoming events for this year is Poetry Out Loud, and Collab writing contests for seniors ?For the first time, the Poetry Out Loud finals will be treated as an in-house field trip for all seniors,? explained Mr. Lally, the head of the English Department. In the past, a lot of seniors were not able to see the entire final round because of schedule conflicts. This year, BHS will invite all senior down to watch the finals in their entirety.

?

Overall, the English Department is creating new changes to improve students here at BHS, Lally states ? The English Department is a pleasure working with such a dedicated and energetic group of peers.?

Healthy eating for the entire family: A chat with RD ... - Tri Fatherhood

Kim Finish 2

Dear Izzy, Max, and Kate,

I?m often asked about nutrition. I guess it?s because I?m a triathlete and that causes people to assume I also eat wisely. While I think I make good decisions more often than not, I?m also guilty of ?I earned it? eating. A lot of triathletes fall victim to that mindset: we figure we put in the miles, so what is it going to hurt to devour an entire pizza, or my personal favorite, an entire pan of hot chocolate chip cookies.

I want to do better. And because I?ve been asked by other parents who are involved in triathlon how to eat healthy, and also feed a family, I reached out to an expert.

Kim Schwabenbeuer is a Registered Dietician. She?s also a professional triathlete. As an amateur she won her age group at St. Croix 70.3 and then won the overall woman?s amateur titles at Ironman Cozumel in 2010 and Ironman Lake Placid in 2011. In 2012 she turned professional and was 10th place among the professional woman at Ironman Arizona, among a star-studded field.

She also coaches triathletes to blend proper training and sound nutrition to be their best. I had a chance to chat with her recently, so I asked her about the nutrition part of the endurance equation ? and how to manage that with a family. Enjoy my conversation with Kim Schwabenbeuer.

**************

Chad: All triathletes are busy, juggling work and training in most cases. Mix a marriage and kids into the equation and ?busy? doesn?t really cover it. We eat on the go too often running from home to work to training session and home. What are a few practical steps?athletes can take to eat healthy on the go?

?

Kim: Planning, planning, planning (a little pre-preparation)!? Every one of us is pretty good about laying out the equipment we need to go on a long bike and making sure our goggles or running shoes are packed for a workout.? Why is it that we leave our nutrition out of this equation!

?

FIVE MINUTES.? That?s all I?m asking?five little minutes of planning for the next day and ten minutes on the weekend.? Spend your ten minutes on the weekend making a list of three meals you can have during the week using the SAME main ingredients for each.? If you can buy a large package of chicken breasts (fresh or frozen) and then plan three dinner meals around that such as baked chicken, chicken tortillas and Chicken Marsala with a steamed vegetable side and salad is the way to go! ?Eating at home is much healthier than going out (for the most part) and you can lighten up saturated fat and keeping sodium down while you?re cooking makes it a healthier option.

?

Another huge time saver is to do a make ahead breakfast with PROTEIN such as an egg frittata with lots of veggies.? One muffin pan tin can produce up to 24 muffins!? Freeze ??s and keep the rest in your fridge to microwave on high for 20 seconds right before you head out the door to eat in your car or bring it to your desk at work to chow down!??

?

Use your 5 minutes the day before to go over what you?ll bring with you in terms of snacks, pre-bag veggies for snacks.

Ironman AZ Bike 1

?

Chad: I find that at our house it gets hectic at dinner time. We?re sometimes rushing from place to place. We have 3 kids, all of whom are very active and involved. That?s a pretty common scenario for the average triathlete. What are a few ways families like ours can slow down for a healthy meal that meets the needs of the triathlete in the house and satisfies everyone else too?

?

Kim: Making the family dinner time somewhat sacred is so so important to not only forming good communication and connecting with our family members, but it?s also a perfect way for parents to demonstrate healthy eating behaviors for children.? Again, good planning before the week begins will allow you to identify which days will work to sit down between practices and training sessions and when.?

?

Introducing healthy foods as early as possible also helps to show that the whole family will be eating the same thing (for the most part) and there will not be separate meals prepared for children vs. adults.? Children will need smaller portions than the adults depending on their age and activity requirements as they grow.? Offer about one tablespoon of food for each year of your child?s age.? For example, a 3-year-old needs only three tablespoons of sweet potatoes on his or her plate. If there is something new on the plate (such as a new recipe being tried or a new vegetable), a good idea is to tell them they must have three bites before they can refuse the item.?

Grabbed Frame 20

?

Chad: What are your suggestions for fueling for a long workout/race without leading your family down a path to a carb loading frenzy as well?

?

Kim: Most of us are overdoing it by quite a bit in this area of grain based carbohydrates!? Your two hour bike tomorrow does not require 3 cups of cooked pasta to get prepared.? So, keep that in mind as you read my response!

?

Fruits and vegetables are also primarily carbohydrate-based so they are wonderful ways to make sure your liver is stored up with glycogen (the storage form of carbohydrate) and ready to go for a long bike ride the next day.? In a race situation, you do want to keep things lighter with less fiber / less vegetables starting at noon the day prior.? With this said, doing your own thing and explaining the ?why? portion to your family is totally acceptable and you can use the opportunity to teach a little nutrition science and physiology while trying to convince your kids you ARE in fact cool and you DO in fact know what you are doing!

DSC_0207

?

Chad: Do you have suggestions for teaching kids benefits of healthy eating without being overbearing or strict? I want my kids to enjoy childhood, but?I would also like for them to learn the benefits of healthy nutrition.

?

Kim: We?ve all heard the saying, like Mother like daughter or like Father like son.? This is our first line of attack!? If they see you doing it (eating fruits and vegetables, preparing food in a healthy way), and liking it, they will try more healthy items and like them. That?s your first line of offense!?

?

Your second is ?making it fun?.? Does it take a bit of time, YES!? After awhile you won?t even notice that you are putting a bit more effort into making healthy choices fun because it will be the staple in your household.? For example, dried fruits and nuts and seeds are great for lunches, as well as yogurt and cubes of cheese with different chopped vegetables. Use a cookie cutter to make fun shapes out of sandwiches.? Kids like anything they can handle and dip!? Make that a priority to have those things on hand and available for the usual ?MOOMMMM/DAADDDDD, I?m hungry!??

?

Involve your children in the preparation, removing the kale leaves from the stalk with their hands or peeling an orange.? You can talk about the benefits of the vitamins and minerals in that food, while you?re teaching them life-long cooking skills!

?

Finally, explore different taste sensations as a family.? One idea is to buy a new spice and try it out.? What is the consensus?? Love it or not so much?? Allow your children to explore the sweet, savory, bitter, and sour tastes of different foods.? Introducing new tastes and smells will encourage food exploration.? Before you know it, healthy food choices will be a part of all of your lives!

Colorful Veggies of all types

?

Chad: It?s expensive for families to eat healthy, right?

?

Kim: Actually, it can be cheaper and less complicated than preparing food out of a box!? Keeping your pantry and refrigerator stocked with healthy, inexpensive items is key!? What we really have to look at is being smart, prepping food, and taking a bit of time to plan.? After the Holidays an entire turkey may be on sale.? It would be a great idea to prepare, slice it, freeze some of it and have some on hand.? It?s cheaper AND doesn?t have the preservatives / nitrates of the store bought sliced type, but the key is time!?

?

Some things to have around at all times if you can that are basic AND inexpensive: 1% milk, butter, eggs, apples, bananas, lemons, corn, green beans, potatoes, lettuce, garlic, onions, flour, honey, salt, oats, dried beans, nuts, a block of cheese, a whole chicken or turkey, etc.

?

Chad: Favorite quick breakfast?

?

Kim: Egg Frittatas ? Make these babies ahead and eat them with fruit for breakfast all week!? Love them!

?

http://thekitcheniscalling.wordpress.com/2012/02/03/muffin-tin-egg-frittatas/

?

Chad: Brown bag lunch at the office?

?

Kim: Make ahead salad ( reference: http://www.wish-bone.com/recipes), Banana with almond butter & a piece of dark chocolate for dessert!

?

Chad: Dinner with limited prep time?
Kim: Quinoa and Black Beans

Chad: Shake recipe?

?Kim:

  • Frozen berries 1 cup
  • ? cup greek yogurt (plain, lowfat)
  • Scoop of protein powder
  • Tsp. tart cherry juice
  • 3 oz. orange juice
  • 3 oz. organic 1% milk

?

BLEND IT!? YUM! Smoothie packed with great micronutrients and protein / fiber!

*****

I hope you enjoyed meeting Kim. I think we?re going to hear more from her on the professional triathlon scene? in the next few years. You can follow her on her blog, on twitter, and on Facebook.

I love you,

- Daddy

'Vampire Diaries' death in midseason finale | Inside TV | EW.com

On Thursday?s midseason finale of The Vampire Diaries (The CW, 8 p.m. ET), death will again come to Mystic Falls. One of these six will die. Who will it be? First a refresher, then a vote!

Tyler (Michael Trevino): After breaking his own hybrid sire bond to Klaus, Tyler has teamed up with werewolf Hayley to help 12 other hybrids do the same. We know from the promo, Tyler has his mind set on ?taking out Klaus? in this hour, which is worrisome because ? no offense, Tyler ? we think Klaus can definitely outsmart him. Also working against Tyler: Stefan doesn?t approve of his plan. And, Hayley has promised Professor Shane 12 unsired hybrids, which he presumably wants to sacrifice so he (through Bonnie) can access the dark magic witches refer to as Expression. Hayley wants to spare Tyler; Shane has made no promises.

Carol Lockwood (Susan Walters): Should Klaus want to punish Tyler for leading an uprising against him, Tyler?s mother would seem a good target, no? And with the town hosting a ?Winter Wonderland-themed party,? the mayor should be out and about?

Liz Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre): If trouble ends up going down at a town event, Sheriff Forbes would be there, right? We wouldn?t want Caroline to be an orphan, but it?s been a while since Candice Accola made us cry (which she does so well)?

Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen): His ring should save him if one of those vampires he?s got the urge to hunt gets the better of him (unless someone chops his hand off with the axe tank-topped Jeremy is wielding in a clip, of course). But he?ll be at the Gilbert family lake house with Damon, Elena, Bonnie, and Professor Shane, who can?t be trusted ? and is presumably human, which means the ring wouldn?t work if he were to sacrifice Jeremy naturally. Remember, back in New Orleans 1942, the witch tricked Damon into killing ?12 souls,? which means a human theoretically counts toward the tally. That could also spell trouble for?

Matt (Zach Roerig): We haven?t seen him in any promos or clips, so he could either be safe offscreen working overtime at the Grill, or find himself caught up in a deadly situation that?s too much of a spoiler to tease?

Bonnie (Kat Graham): The show seems to need its resident witch (though not in every episode), so you think she?d make it to 2013. Then again, we?ve seen that powerful spells can kill a witch, and there?s always the chance that someone will have to take her out (even Bonnie herself) if they realize Shane?s been using her for evil.

Nefertiti, a spider that traveled 42 million miles through space before returning to Earth in October, died after being sent to the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

The experiment was designed to determine if a spider dependent on gravity for catching its meals would be able to adapt and eat in micro gravity.

According to the Boulder Daily Camera , the spider was able to hunt down fruit flies in her sealed space environment on the International Space Station. The spider managed to survive despite a miscalculation on the amount of food needed for the mission.

The Johnson jumping spider (species Phidippus johnsoni). arrived at the Smithsonian's Insect Zoo this past Thursday. By, Monday it had expired.

The Boulder Daily Camera reported:

"Neffi, of a species that typically enjoys a lifespan of about one year, was 10 months old. Monday's passing of the so-called "spidernaut," according to the Smithsonian, was due to natural causes. However, the Smithsonian conceded that no necropsy was performed on the deceased arachnid.

The experiment that made Neffi famous was conceived as part of the NASA-sponsored YouTube Space Lab contest in which two student-proposed studies were selected from thousands submitted worldwide by video. Amr Mohamed, 18, of Egypt, suggested examining whether a spider normally dependent on gravity for catching its meals would be able to adapt, and eat, in a micro-gravity environment."

According to NASA, Mohamed's project was designed to look at whether jumping spiders, like the zebra and red-backed species, can adapt their hunting abilities to microgravity. Jumping spiders do not build webs for catching their food. These particular spiders hunt using their excellent vision to track and stalk prey, jumping and striking with a lethal bite -- similar to cats hunting mice.
?

?"I have always been fascinated by science because with a handful of equations, I can explain the world around me," said Mohamed in his Meet the Winner YouTube video. "The idea of sending an experiment to space is the most exciting thing that I have ever heard in my life."

Eventually, Mohamed's experiment was designed by Colorado University. It demonstrated that a spider was able to hunt down fruit flies in her sealed space environment on the International Space Station just fine -- until her food supply ran out, explained Stefanie Countryman, the projects manager for K-12 Educational Projects at CU's BioServe Space Technologies.

Are Motorcycles the Last Refuge from Robot Transporters?

The TerminatorWhen you hear the word, robot, what springs to mind? It?s often some movie robot with a semi humanoid appearance or it could be one of the movie androids that look just like a human, the Terminator or Data from Star Trek, but in reality, robots don?t need any humanoid appearance, no arms and legs or verbal communication, a robot is just a complex machine, performing certain tasks, repetitively and precisely, without a break, a vacation or health benefits.

Robots have been on my mind a lot lately because I?ve come across all kinds of fascinating stories about the new jobs they?re performing, jobs you might think require a human, but in reality, require no such thing, they just need someone or something to follow a simple set of rules. If this, then that, no higher level skills involved. It?s amazing how many seemingly complex tasks can be simplified into a series of logical and very simple decisions, if you?re a programmer you already know this, but for a lot of folks, it can come as a shock.

Komatsu dump truck similar to the type being turned into a robot

Komatsu dump truck similar to the type being turned into a robot

The other day, I wrote elsewhere about a couple of big mines in Australia, buying a number of those enormous dump trucks, you know, the big ones, 2 stories tall, 500 tons loaded, REALLY big trucks, $6 million each, but as big as they are, all they do is wait for a load of ore to be shoveled into the bed then drive a known route, dump it, get another load, dump it, and they do this 24 hours a day. The drivers are well paid, comfortably into six figures, and you need at least three drivers to cover three shifts, plus vacations and benefits, if you add up the cost, how long does it take to pay for one of those trucks if you don?t need a driver ? Well, they don?t. The new trucks are robots. I?ll bet you didn?t think of a dump truck when you heard the word ?robot.?

Most of you know about Google?s autonomous cars, they can do far more complex tasks than those dump trucks, the cars drive through city traffic from any point to anywhere else. Accident free except for when a human took control, think about that.

X-47b drone

X-47b drone

Drones, those robot planes and helicopters, are being used by everyone these days, the military loves them and the Navy?s X-47B, a stealth, jet fighter sized drone is almost ready for its first test where it will take off from and land on an aircraft carrier early next year, much to the dismay of fighter pilots everywhere. If a drone with a fighter plane?s capabilities but no need to carry, sustain and protect a pilot, no need to restrict its maneuvering because of how many G?s a pilot can withstand, think of the possibilities, unmanned super fighters and attack aircraft.

Robots can drive anything ? and probably will

Round out the transportation field and how many vehicle operators can be replaced by robots? Over the road truck drivers? Just think, no limit to the hours driven on any single day and no need to sleep. Engineers on trains? Airports already have those robot shuttle trains carrying passengers to remote terminals, why do they still have engineers on the big freight trains? Trains run on rails, you don?t even need to steer. The caboose disappeared years ago. What does an engineer do these days? Cargo ship captains and crews? Crews are already dramatically shrinking. Airline pilots? If passengers knew how much of their flight is already controlled by software, they would be shocked. Once in the air, planes fly themselves, a 747 can land itself. The pilot and copilot today may make the passengers feel better, but once passengers get over the creepy feeling of knowing their pilot is really a computer and not some square jawed fellow with thousands of hours in the air, flying may become even safer than it already is. Add to that list, bus drivers, taxi drivers, delivery truck drivers; if all the driver, engineer, captain or pilot does is move a big cargo carrying vehicle from one place to another, robots are pretty much a certainty. Never tired, always vigilant, never gets lost, an all knowing expert under every circumstance, how can a human compete?

When the truck, train, plane or cargo ship arrives at its destination, the unloading and reloading can be highly automated. All of those standardized cargo containers are perfect for robots to pick, stack and transfer, continuing the delivery until it gets to the end of the trip, wherever that may be. Some international ports are already well along in this process. Even commercial airliners could land, pull up to the terminal and discharge passengers without human intervention. Remote control from a central location could start any of these processes until it could be fully automated.

The machine is the robot

Another point to keep in mind is that this idea of a separate robot doing the driving is wrong, the only reason we think of that function as separate is because it always has been, there was a vehicle and a driver, we had the brain, the vehicle was the muscle. The interface was the seat and steering wheel. With a robot, the control system is integral to the vehicle itself, it?s not a truck with a robot driver, it?s a robot truck. The whole vehicle is the robot. You don?t have a robot train engineer, you have a very long, segmented, articulated, robot train. Humans aren?t a body and a brain, our brains are integral to the system, we?re human beings. Same idea. Forget the humanoid form, a robot is any self controlled machine, no matter the shape or function, no matter how big or small.

Motorcycles are different

Interestingly enough, there seems to be one curiosity among motor vehicles far less likely to be roboticized, and that?s the motorcycle. The main reason for a motorcycle in most countries of the world isn?t some utilitarian function, it?s for the sheer pleasure of riding, the excitement, the development of skills; what do you gain if you turn it into a robot? Nothing. There?s no economic incentive to remove the rider from the motorcycle so it can do its job more efficiently. If you remove the rider, what?s left?

Of course, Lit Motors is building a gyro stabilized, fully enclosed two seater and once the balance factor is handled, everything you can do with a car can be applied to the bike, too. As an engineering exercise you can have that robot motorcycle after all, you could even teach it to robotically split lanes between the robot cars and trucks. Maybe robot motorcycle races would gain a following, hmm, ?

In a way, it may provide some comfort to the riders here, knowing you?re not on the way out immediately, soon to be replaced by sensors and servo motors, but it also provides perspective, emphasizing the non utilitarian, purely human appeal that motorcycles provide. Other vehicles have that appeal, too, but motorcycles have little else. In a world where everything is reduced to utilitarian function, it?s nice to know something exists for its own sake, to provide a pleasurable experience.

Now, think about what you do every day. How many ?If/Then/Else? decision trees would it take to remove a lot of those tasks from your hands and allow a machine with the proper algorithm to do what you do, ? only better? Something to think about and a strong incentive to learn a lot of new skills, wouldn?t you say?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o was looking forward to a break. It's been a long week for most decorated football player in the country.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel seemed to have more energy when he arrived at a midtown Manhattan hotel with his fellow Heisman Trophy finalist.

The two players spent about 30 minutes getting grilled by dozens of reporters before being whisked away to more interviews.

Manziel, Te'o or Collin Klein, the other finalist ? who could not make it to town Friday ? each has a chance to be a Heisman first Saturday night.

Manziel is trying to be the first freshman to win the award. Te'o would be the first winner to play only defense. Klein would be Kansas State's first Heisman winner.

PFT: Suggs can play with injury; Lewis practices

BrownerReuters

With Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman fighting his four-game suspension for violation of the league?s policy against steroids and related substances, the team?s other starter at the position has opted to take his medicine for allegedly taking medicine that he shouldn?t have taken.? Allegedly.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Brandon Browner decided that he couldn?t win the appeal, given the procedures to which the league and the NFLPA have agreed regarding drug testing.? Despite concerns regarding the collection process, the rules that apply to internal appeals make it difficult if not impossible to prevail.

So even if Browner didn?t knowingly or unknowingly ingest a substance contain amphetamines ? or even if he didn?t actually consume a substance containing amphetamines ? he produced a sample that generated a positive result for amphetamines.? Even if it was a false positive or a bad sample or any other irregularity, Browner will miss four games, eventually.

Of course, it would have been somewhat cheaper for Browner to fight.? With a base salary of $465,000, he?ll lose $27,352 per week for each of the final four games of the 2012 regular season.? Sherman, who earns the same base salary, will lose only $20,000 if he misses a wild-card game ? and only $22,000 if he misses the division round.

If any of Sherman?s suspension extends into 2013, when Browner and Sherman will each be earning $555,000 in base pay, the suspension will cost $32,647 per week.

The other reality is that, with Browner?s suspension starting now, he?ll be back for the first playoff game.? Sherman, barring an unlikely victory on appeal, will miss at least one playoff game.? But the good news is that the team won?t be without both players for any postseason game.

And it would be naive to think that the team had no role in suggesting this approach or encouraging it.? Without both starting corners, the Seahawks? chances of winning their first playoff game would have been significantly lower.
