Pantech Element hands-on at CES 2012

The Pantech Element has been hanging around the rumor mill for quite some time, so it wasn't much of a surprise when we saw it show up at the AT&T Developer Summit keynote earlier today. All of the specs were right on with what we'd heard before: 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU, 8-inch TFT XGA display, 5MP rear camera / 2MP front-facing, 6,400 mAh battery for over 12 hours of high-use battery life and of course, waterproof with IP57 certification. We got a little clarification on what Pantech means by this, and it turns out that the tablet can be submerged in up to one foot of water for thirty minutes without batting an eye.

Playing around with the tablet, we were surprised by its light weight and classy look. It was incredibly glossy, however, which was painfully obvious by the number of times we felt compelled to wipe smudges off the front and back. The ports of entry were all covered appropriately by secured plastic flaps, but it's necessary in order to keep water or other liquid from getting inside. The tablet runs on Android 3.2, and in our limited time with the device felt smooth and without lag. Overall, it felt as though the tablet certainly fit the price range, which isn't something we were able to say about the $600 (on contract) HTC Jetstream. The Element will be available starting January 22nd for $300 with a two-year commitment, though AT&T is running a limited promotion in which you can get both the Element and the Pantech Burst together for $250. Take a look below to check out some up close and personal images.

Deputy William Coleman, 50, and his partner found a suspect in a van with a pit bull dog at a medical building at about 4 a.m., Arpaio said.

The man got out of the van and opened fire with a rifle, striking Coleman under his bulletproof vest. The deputy was taken to a hospital but doctors could not save him.

It isn't clear if Coleman was able to return fire, but other deputies eventually shot and killed the suspect, Arpaio said. The dog was calm and was taken to a sheriff's animal shelter.

Arpaio said investigators were trying to figure out why the 40-year-old man opened fire.

"We're trying to determine his identity, his background, to see if he has warrants or was involved in other criminal activity," Arpaio said. "I want to see who and what his background is, what caused him to come out shooting."

Coleman was a 20-year veteran. He is survived by a wife and two young children, ages 4 and 7, Arpaio said. He also has grown children in another state.

Coleman was assigned as a patrol deputy but had previously worked the sheriff's lake patrol unit.

Last year was one of the deadliest in recent history for law enforcement officers, with 173 killed in the line of duty as of Dec. 28, a 13 percent increase from 2010, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Of those, 68 federal, state and local officers were killed by gunfire in 2011, a 15 percent jump from the year before.

"There seems to be a war on cops across the nation, and here in Arizona," Arpaio said Sunday.

Windows 8's New "Toy-Like" Security Option Gives Businesses Cause for Worry

Microsoft's new password option for Windows 8 was recently revealed. The father of RSA's SecurID token, Kenneth Weiss, found it "cute" and didn't think it was "serious security." Microsoft is certainly making it hard for IT pros to take them seriously with this move--which is potentially fatal since Windows does best in the enterprise space. To say the least, Windows depends on its enterprise clientele.

Windows' New Password Option Is "More Like a Fisher-Price Toy"

To log in, you have to touch specific points in a certain order on a picture. It is easy to see why Weiss would say, "It's more like a Fisher-Price toy than a serious choice for secure computer access." He sees one obvious problem: It's too easy for a potential hacker to record the movement required to log in by watching a person actually log in, which is why the traditional password system displays your password in uniform dots. This isn't the only potential issue. Whisper Systems, which specializes in mobile security, has a tool that changes the Android login from the rows of dots you have to slide your finger across in a specific pattern to one column. Why? Because if a thief steals your device, he can use the finger smudges on the screen to decipher the pattern. This same issue could apply to the new picture password feature.

However, it's only an option. Microsoft will offer an alternative--the traditional login system, according to Infoworld. Weiss argues that businesses might be interested in Windows 8 because it aims to improve security and power efficiency and to unify with ARM processors so it will run more smoothly with tablets and other computers utilizing ARM.

BSoD in Windows 8Why These Arguments Are Insolvent

First, if Microsoft is really trying to improve on security, their picture password choice was a bad move, as Weiss states himself. Secondly, if they're offering the traditional login option, which businesses would likely choose, what was the point of picture passwords? All around, Windows 8 is clearly made to make Microsoft competitive in the tablet market, so it's possible they just wanted to do something "fun" to add to the tablet experience. But in the enterprise space, "fun" isn't what sells, and if you're like many IT pros at small and midsize businesses (SMBs), you're not happy when the line between consumer and enterprise IT becomes blurred, as discussed in another Infoboom article.

That being said, Microsoft isn't making it easy for SMBs that want a piece of the tablet movement. SMBs plan on being involved, but many are leaning toward the iPad, which already dominates a large portion of the consumer tablet market. Windows tablets have a good shot at gaining a customer base, but only if Microsoft sticks to its strength, that is, business. True, this is just one mistake, but if this is indicative of future developments, they're not going to win businesses back from Apple this way. As an IT pro, do you want a consumerized Windows tablet? Isn't one of the most prominent perks of Windows its enterprise environment, its legacy productivity suites? If your SMB is one interested in tablets, you'll want to keep your eye on Microsoft's next moves.

Shades of NKorea's founder in its young new leader (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? The resemblance is striking: the full cheeks and quick smile, the confident gait, the habit of gesturing with both hands when he speaks.

North Korea's young new leader, Kim Jong Un, appears to be fashioning himself as the reincarnation of Kim Il Sung, his grandfather and the nation's founder, as he seeks to solidify his hold on the nation of 24 million in the wake of his father's death last month.

Unlike Kim Jong Il, who sequestered himself for three years of mourning before formally taking up the mantle of leadership, Kim Jong Un is moving swiftly to demonstrate a decisiveness perhaps aimed at dispelling concerns about his ability to rule. He is only in his late 20s and made his public debut as his father's anointed successor just 15 months ago, far less time than the 20 years Kim Jong Il had to prepare to lead.

With the world watching, Kim Jong Un has tread confidently down the "red silk carpet" laid before him by his father, as one analyst put it, using family tradition as his guideposts. Kim Il Sung has served as his main muse as he seeks to consolidate power and loyalty.

"The image of a young smiling Kim Il Sung is deeply engraved in North Korean people's minds. It is the image of a young general who liberated the nation from Japan's imperial rule," said Ahn Chan-il, a political scientist at the World Institute for North Korea Studies in South Korea who was born in North Korea. "Kim Jong Un is borrowing from that. Kim Il Sung is resurrected in the looks and behavior of Kim Jong Un."

Two years ago, the world knew so little about the young man that even the South Korean government was spelling his name wrong. Here's a look at what we know now.

___

THE BLOODLINE

Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il were characterized in North Korea as having a divine right to rule, and Kim Jong Un is leaning on this legacy as he shores up support for a third generation of Kim leadership.

Kim Il Sung founded the country in 1948, three years after Korea was divided into the Soviet-backed north and the U.S.-allied south. When he died in 1994, Kim Jong Il took over in what was the first hereditary succession in the communist world.

"His power comes from the bloodline," said Kim Gwang-in, head of research at the North Korea Strategy Center in Seoul.

Plans for Kim Jong Un to succeed his father were laid out after Kim Jong Il suffered a stroke in 2008. As recently as October, Kim Jong Il issued an order to elevate his son to supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, the Korean Central News Agency reported late last month.

"Kim Jong Il laid a red silk carpet, and Kim Jong Un only needs to walk on it," said Jeung Young-tae of the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul.

The most important holidays in North Korea are the birthdays of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, and it's likely that Kim Jong Un's birthday will become a national holiday as well. Exactly when he was born has never been revealed, but it's widely believed that he will celebrate a birthday on Sunday.

In recent days, North Korea's state broadcaster has aired tributes and odes to Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, as well as the first documentary footage of Kim Jong Un and a tune composed to prepare for his leadership: "Footsteps."

___

THE LOOK

Kim Jong Un's resemblance to his grandfather is uncanny ? and probably strategic.

He is in his late 20s, undeniably young for the leader of a nation. But Kim Il Sung was just a few years older when he emerged in 1945 to lead the North after Japan's World War II defeat ended its colonial rule of Korea.

"When Kim Jong Un smiles, that reminds me exactly of a 33-year-old Kim Il Sung," Ahn said.

Photos of Kim Il Sung hanging on the walls of the Workers' Party Foundation Museum in Pyongyang, spotted during an October visit by The Associated Press, show a dapper young man with a startling similarity to Kim Jong Un. Even their hairlines are trimmed identically.

The grandson walks, shoulders thrown back, and gestures with both hands like his grandfather.

Last year, Kim Jong Un appeared in a light gray parka like the one his father famously wore. And during the mourning period, Kim Jong Un donned a dark Mao-style suit like the one his father wore when Kim Il Sung died in 1994.

However, since then, Kim Jong Un has traded the parka for a dark, double-breasted winter overcoat ? much like the jackets his grandfather favored.

___

THE CEREMONIES

Solemn and somber in mourning, Kim Jong Un followed the routine set by his father at Kim Il Sung's 1994 funeral. He bowed at three sides of his father's glass-encased casket at Kumsusan Memorial Palace, just as his father did 17 years earlier.

For the funeral, officials dusted off one of Kim Il Sung's Lincoln Continentals for the procession through the snowy streets of Pyongyang. Just as in 1994, mourners lined the street wailing.

But Kim Jong Un played an even more public role in the procession than his father in 1994. Barehanded and bareheaded, he walked with the hearse, right hand held up in a salute, left hand at times resting on the vehicle.

For many in Pyongyang, it was their first chance to see the new leader in person.

___

THE INSPECTIONS

Kim Jong Un wasted no time in wading into the public eye. His first inspection visit without his father was a well-documented New Year's Day trip to a tank unit with symbolic ties to his family and his nation's history.

He laughed and clapped during his visit with the Seoul Ryu Kyong Su tank division, and even pulled officers close to give them a word of advice. He got busy inspecting bunks and testing the water faucets.

The division was the first North Korean unit to march into Seoul during the early days of the Korean War in 1950, and was a favorite unit of Kim Jong Il's. The visit sent a pointed message about Kim Jong Un's intention to uphold his father's "military first" policy, and gave North Koreans a glimpse of his style.

The photos and documentary footage were sent within two days of the visit ? notably quick turnaround for state media, which in the last years of Kim Jong Il's life typically provided only still images of the aging leader.

Ahn said it seemed odd to him that state media would show Kim Jong Un's easy laughter with the troops just two weeks after his father's death.

"It is a sign of the urgency the North feels in trying to put behind the Kim Jong Il leadership," he said.

___

THE PROPAGANDA

New banners and posters in Pyongyang urge the people to "follow the leadership of respected Comrade Kim Jong Un" and "devotedly defend" Kim Jong Un.

Kim Jong Un also made his debut on a postage stamp: a 70-won stamp, equivalent to 50 U.S. cents at official exchange rates, depicts a smiling Kim Jong Un with his father, both clad in the same light gray parka.

His official portrait has not been made public yet, and it remains to be seen whether it will hang next to those of his father and grandfather in every building in North Korea.

Reports in South Korean media say Pyongyang's premier Mansudae Art Studio created a Jong Un portrait in 2010; it could be revealed as early as his birthday Sunday, predicted Cheong Seong-chang, a senior fellow at the Sejong Institute in South Korea.

North Koreans also show their loyalty by wearing pins of the Kims. But even today, most still wear Kim Il Sung's visage pinned to their shirts, not Kim Jong Il's.

___

THE NICKNAMES

Kim Jong Un became known in North Korea as the "Young General" beginning in September 2010, when state media announced that he had been made a four-star general. He became "Respected General" or "Illustrious General" last year in signs that offered blessings to him, his father and grandfather.

The day Kim Jong Il's death was announced, state media referred to the son with a new, telling nickname: "Great Successor."

"Supreme commander" of the military; "supreme leader" of the people, party and army; "great leader": the nicknames began to echo those of his grandfather and father. The most affectionate remains "dear comrade" or "dear respected comrade."

Kim Il Sung ruled as president, and remains North Korea's "eternal president" long after his death.

Kim Jong Il ruled as chairman of the National Defense Commission, a position that under the constitution gave him authority as "supreme leader" of North Korea.

It remains to be seen which title will give Kim Jong Un authority as supreme leader under the constitution.

___

THE IDEOLOGY

Kim Jong Il's "military first" policy may serve as North Korea's main ideology for now under Kim Jong Un, but a new ideology will likely emerge, intended to prove to the people that he can raise their standard of living.

Analysts said the goal is to link Kim Jong Un more closely to the early, nation-building years of Kim Il Sung's rule rather than the economic hardship and famine of Kim Jong Il's era.

In the 1960s and 1970s, North Korea rebuilt quickly from the ashes of the Korean War with Soviet help, and its economy was stronger than that of rival South Korea. But natural disasters and outdated agricultural practices, compounded by the loss of Soviet aid, triggered a famine that killed hundreds of thousands of North Koreans in the mid- to late-1990s. Chronic food shortages persist.

"I expect North Korea to come up with more practical ideas that can help feed the people and strengthen the image of Kim Jong Un as someone who's capable of that," said Koh Yu-hwan, a professor of North Korean studies at Dongguk University in Seoul.

Koh added that Kim "has to demonstrate that he is a capable leader from now on."

Alcoa to close Tennessee smelter, make other cuts

(AP) ? Alcoa Inc. said Thursday that it plans to close an aluminum smelter in Tennessee and some operations at a Texas facility to cut costs in the face of weak prices.

The moves, plus others to come, will reduce Alcoa's global smelting capacity by about 12 percent.

Aluminum prices have fallen by about one-fourth since April because of factors such as weak demand in construction, slower growth in China and uncertainty about the direction of Europe's economy. Meanwhile, Alcoa has faced higher energy and raw-material costs.

New York-based Alcoa said it will take restructuring charges of $155 million to $165 million in the fourth quarter, mostly related to the cutbacks. It is scheduled to release financial results Monday.

The company said that it would permanently close a smelter in Alcoa, Tenn., idled in 2009, and shut down two of the six idle production lines at a smelter in Rockdale, Texas. It expects to complete the moves in the first half of this year and announce other reductions soon.

In 2009, the Tennessee and Texas smelters employed more 1,100 people combined. Alcoa still has about 1,000 workers at the Tennessee complex and 70 in Texas, working in other facilities, a spokesman said.

"These are difficult but necessary steps to improve Alcoa's competitiveness, preserve and grow shareholder value and protect jobs in the rest of the Alcoa system," said Chairman and CEO Klaus Kleinfeld.

Alcoa shares fell 9 cents to close at $9.36. In extended trading, they were down another 15 cents, at $9.21.

West Virginia drubs Clemson 70-33 in Orange Bowl (AP)

MIAMI ? As the West Virginia Mountaineers celebrated their first Orange Bowl victory, safety Darwin Cook shared a hug with the game's mascot, Obie.

They had run into each other earlier in the end zone when Cook scored the night's pivotal touchdown, then leaped on the smiling orange. Only after the game did he learn a woman was wearing the Obie outfit.

"I didn't know you were a girl," he told her. "I apologize."

The Mountaineers ran over everything in their path Wednesday night, including the Clemson Tigers. Geno Smith tied the record for any bowl game with six touchdown passes, and the No. 23-ranked Mountaineers set a bowl scoring record with their high-powered offense by routing No. 14 Clemson 70-33.

But it was a defensive player ? Cook ? who made the most memorable play by returning a fumble 99 yards for a touchdown to break the game open.

Standing in the sideline, Smith watched a video replay of Cook's touchdown in disbelief.

"Crazy, man," Smith said. "When I saw that, I knew things were breaking our way."

Cook collided comically with mascot Obie after scoring one of the Mountaineers' five TDs in the second quarter, including three in the final 2:29 for a 49-20 lead. It was the highest-scoring half by a team in a bowl game.

"I always envisioned making great plays," Cook said. "If you think it will happen, it will happen."

Tavon Austin tied a record for any bowl game with four touchdown catches. Smith went 31 for 42 and had 401 yards passing to break Tom Brady's Orange Bowl record. Smith also ran for a score, helping West Virginia break the bowl record for points established six nights earlier when Baylor beat Washington 67-56 in the Alamo Bowl.

"Never could we imagine we'd put up 70 points," Smith said.

"It was like a virus," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said.

The Mountaineers (10-3) won in their first Orange Bowl appearance and improved to 3-0 in Bowl Championship Series games.

"Our guys felt like they weren't getting too much credit," West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said. "And they wanted to make a statement in this game."

Clemson (10-4) lost playing in its first major bowl in 30 years. Despite the drubbing, Swinney said, the wait for a return trip won't be so long.

"It won't be 30 years," Swinney said. "We'll be back."

The offensive showcase was the latest in a succession this bowl season, and perhaps the last. Defense is expected to dominate in the final BCS game Monday night, when Louisiana State faces Alabama for the national title.

West Virginia totaled 589 yards and 31 first downs. Smith was chosen the game's outstanding player but gave Austin an assist.

"He won me an MVP," Smith said. "He's one of the quickest guys I've ever seen, and it's just a blessing to have a guy like him on my team."

Austin had 11 receptions, scoring on passes of 8, 27, 3 and 37 yards.

"I do know who the fastest kid on the field was," Holgorsen said. "We made a conscious effort to get him the ball a bunch, and whenever we got him the ball, he made things happen."

Clemson couldn't keep up with the Big East Conference co-champions, although Andre Ellington did score the game's first points on a 68-yard run. First-team All-Americans Sammy Watkins and Dwayne Allen combined for only seven catches for 87 yards.

"We didn't play too good," Watkins said. "We've got the whole next year to get right."

Amid the flurry of points, defensive back Cook came up with second-longest play in Orange Bowl history.

Clemson was on the verge of taking the lead in the second quarter when Ellington ran up the middle and disappeared into a heap at the 1. A teammate signaled touchdown, but the ball came loose and Cook grabbed it, then took off with nothing but the end zone in front of him.

"Cook was the only one in the stadium who knew the ball was out," teammate Bruce Irvin said. "That was a heads-up play."

The potential 14-point swing seemed to deflate the Tigers, who had moved the ball almost at will to that point.

"They hadn't really stopped us," Swinney said. "That was huge. Then it snowballed quickly."

The Tigers were doomed when quarterback Tajh Boyd committed turnovers on consecutive Clemson plays.

After Smith ran 7 yards on a keeper for a 35-20 lead, Pat Miller intercepted Boyd's pass. Smith flipped a 1-yard touchdown pass to Austin and, on the next play a call was overturned, with the replay official determining Boyd had lost a fumble.

Alston then ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 4 seconds left in the half.

"Momentum swung not in our favor, and it was hard to recapture," Boyd said. "West Virginia is a great offense. You can't really get behind them. We couldn't stop them. Guys were gassed. Their legs were going. It was a tough loss ? pretty embarrassing."

Taliban said to be coordinating efforts against US-led troops in Afghanistan

The Pakistani Taliban has set up a council of elders in order to coordinate efforts against US-led troops in Afghanistan, a spokesman told CNN on Monday.?

The Associated Press, meantime, reported that Al Qaeda and Afghan Taliban fighters had also sought to join in a united battle against NATO and its allies in Afghanistan.?

According to the AP, leaders of the groups met in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region in November and December at the request of the Afghan Taliban's leadership council.

They could indicate the militants are struggling in Afghanistan, or conversely, that they want to make sure they hit US forces hard as the Americans accelerate their withdrawal this year. That could give the Taliban additional leverage in any peace negotiations.

"For God's sake, forget all your differences and give us fighters to boost the battle against America in Afghanistan," the AP quoted senior Al Qaeda commander Abu Yahya al-Libi as telling Pakistani fighters at a meeting on Dec. 11.

CNN, meantime, reported that five participating Pakistani Taliban factions, including a branch led by the militant Haqqani network, flagged the move over the weekend via a leaflet circulated in North Waziristan.

The council's creation was spurred by fugitive Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, who urged the Pakistani Taliban and associated jihadist groups to put aside their internal disputes and work together to battle the U.S.-led alliance across the border, Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan told CNN.

The Islamist Afghan Taliban ruled most of Afghanistan before the post 9/11 US-led invasion, and has been battling NATO troops in the countryside ever since. It also opposes the Western-backed government in Kabul.?

However, the AP writes,?the Pakistani Taliban ? though they've sent fighters to Afghanistan ? have concentrated on toppling their own government.

The Pakistani Taliban, an umbrella organization set up in 2007 to represent roughly 40 insurgent groups, has also been split by infighting over turf and leadership positions after commanders were killed by the Pakistani military and US drone strikes.
