Cameron tells Europe to quell the turmoil

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron urged Europe's rulers on Thursday to do more to quell the euro zone debt crisis and raised the prospect of a Greek default to argue he must stick to his unpopular attempt to cut spending and reduce debt at home.

Warning that the survival of the euro was now in question, Cameron showed growing alarm and frustration that the crisis was spinning out of control, threatening Britain's $2.5 trillion (1.58 trillion pounds) economy and his own electoral prospects in 2015.

"Greece is on the brink, the survival of the euro in question," Cameron told business leaders on a grey and damp morning in the northern English city of Manchester.

"Faced with this, I have a clear task: to keep Britain safe. Not to take the easy course - but the right course," he added.

Echoing the words of Bank of England Governor Mervyn King, Cameron said the crisis in the European Union - Britain's biggest trading partner - had lasted more than two years but the "storm" was far from over.

"We are in uncharted territory which carries huge risks for everybody. As I have consistently said, it is in Britain's interest for the euro zone to sort out its problems."

He said Europe's problems showed the dangers of scrapping his government's attempt to cut Britain's vast budget deficit, though he called on the European Central Bank to stimulate demand to help peripheral euro members.

"It is becoming increasingly clear that they are less likely to be able to sustain that necessary adjustment economically or politically unless the core of the euro zone, including through the ECB, does more to support demand and share the burden of adjustment," Cameron said.

He added that the Bank could do more to support the economy if inflation fell below its target, a barbed way of asking Governor King to help boost demand.

After snubbing Francois Hollande when the Socialist candidate came to London weeks before the French election, the Conservative Cameron said he now welcomed the new French president's idea of launching project bonds to drive demand by funding big infrastructure deals.

But since Cameron refused to sign up to an EU economic pact last year that was supposed to help shore up the euro zone, his comments may have more resonance in euro sceptic Britain and his own divided party than in the EU's 26 other member states.

STORM TIME?

For Cameron, the gale winds from Europe threaten to undermine the central purpose of the coalition government he has headed since 2010: to nurture Britain back to growth after the most serious crisis since the Great Depression.

Turmoil in Europe could deepen Britain's recession by crippling the European banking system and dampening already battered demand.

"People are holding back from investment decisions because of that uncertainty - it's the worst enemy for business, uncertainty is the big killer," said Les Harvey, a business consultant who specialises in construction and infrastructure and who attended Cameron's speech.

"It's a concern. It's such a major trading partner - whatever affects them is going to affect us."

Cameron said the storm showed Britain must continue to cut the deficit, which in 2009-2010 reached a record 11 percent of gross domestic product, rather than throwing money into the economy in an attempt to kick-start growth.

"We must resist dangerous voices calling on us to retreat," Cameron said. "If markets don't believe you are serious about dealing with your debts, your interest rates rocket and your economy shrinks."

But even the government's own figures show Britain's public sector net debt will rise over the next four years, hitting a record of 1.48 trillion pounds in 2016, while the deficit cannot shrink as fast as expected if the economy continues to contract.

Opponents said the government had failed to stoke growth.

"The fact is we are paying a long-term price for these failures," the Labour Party's shadow chancellor, Ed Balls, told parliament.

"National debt higher, living standards down, long-term youth unemployment becoming entrenched, over 24,000 companies out of business...investment plans cancelled or diverted overseas, our economy weaker, capacity lost," Balls said.

That economic minefield makes Cameron's position even more precarious as he faces an electorate upset at the gloom of recession and an unruly anti-European Union wing of his Conservative party that wants Britain to leave the club.

latest news: Wholesale Video Game Market

Home video game consoles have come a long way from the original 8-bit systems. One huge benefit to the wholesale industry is the console wars, and the continual release of new video games, accessories, and even entire game systems. These console wars and new releases mean the games and systems replaced are now the hottest commodities on the wholesale market. Here is a quick guide to the wholesale video game world by system.

Let's begin with an overview of the world of video games. There are three major console players: Nintendo, Microsoft, and the largest one, Sony. Each company has released what are now called third generation consoles. These consoles are the Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

Prior to the third generation consoles, gamers had Nintendo's GameCube, Microsoft's Xbox, and Sony's PlayStation 2 to keep their thumbs in shape. The games and accessories of these second generation consoles are what primarily make up the wholesale video game market today. One key aspect to keeping these wholesale games and overstock video game accessories in value is backward compatibility. Backward compatibility is the ability of older video games and accessories, such as controllers and memory cards, to interface with newer generation consoles.

Nintendo GameCube

The saving grace of the Nintendo GameCube games and accessories are backward compatible with the Nintendo Wii. Wholesale retailers can capitalize on the fact the Nintendo GameCube, and Wii appeal to younger game players, so customers of wholesale GameCube games are less concerned with the lack of graphics and innovation. Additionally, Nintendo's GameCube controller and memory card is compatible with the new generation Wii, and a requirement for some games' backward compatibility.

Top selling wholesale video game titles for the Nintendo GameCube include Animal Crossing, Super Monkey Ball, and anything Super Mario or Zelda franchise related. Parents will appreciate the general nonviolent nature of Nintendo GameCube games, and therefore the shelf-life for wholesale accessories and games is long. Purchase of the Nintendo GameCube at wholesale prices is the best first console for children aged six and above, and for those adults who still have a child at heart.

Microsoft Xbox

Xbox is the least backward compatible console to its third generation counterpart. In typical Microsoft fashion, Xbox 360 players must download a patch for individual Xbox games they desire to play on the Xbox 360. Also, since memory cards are almost unnecessary to save progress, there is no sense to install the Xbox's now dwarfed 10GB hard drive in place of the Xbox 360's 20GB or even 120GB hard drive. Popular titles for the Xbox franchise continue to be the Halo series and EA Sports titles, all of which can be found readily available in wholesale video game bargain bins. Wholesale Xbox consoles and games will appeal most to late comers in the violent and action packed video game genres, and those unwilling to spring for the hefty price tag of the Xbox 360.

PlayStation 2

Wholesale PlayStation 2 consoles, games, and accessories are the best solution for wholesale video game retailers. First, the price is much more stable because of the near complete backward compatibility of the wholesale PlayStation 2 games on the new third generation PlayStation 3. Also, the PlayStation 2 is the only second generation console still receiving support; new game titles and accessories are released in conjunction with the same title release for the third generation consoles. The next biggest advantage of wholesale PlayStation 2 games and accessories is the vastness of its catalog and reach. Over 120 million consoles have sold worldwide and game titles range from the cutesy Lego series for kids to the hard core action packed Call of Duty franchise. The shelf-life and profit margin is the highest for wholesale PlayStation 2 games and accessories.

Jays' Lawrie suspended 4 games for ump altercation

TORONTO (AP) ? Brett Lawrie heard the penalty, then expressed just one regret about his tantrum: that his batting helmet bounced up and hit an umpire.

Major League Baseball suspended Lawrie for four games and fined him an undisclosed amount Wednesday, a day after the Toronto third baseman got into an altercation with umpire Bill Miller.

Lawrie appealed and can play until there is a hearing, which could be held next week via video conference. He said he intended to apologize to Miller for being hit in the right hip.

"The only thing I would change is maybe not throwing the helmet or any equipment toward the umpire because you can get an unlucky hop and have the kind of mess that's going on right now," he said.

The 22-year-old Lawrie was in the starting lineup Wednesday night against the New York Yankees ? with the same umpiring crew in town, Miller was stationed in close proximity at third base.

Lawrie received the loudest cheer in pregame introductions and the umpires were booed when their names were posted on the scoreboard. He did not speak with Miller upon taking his position for the top of the first, and quickly ran off the field after the inning ended.

"I'm just playing the game the way I've always played it," Lawrie said. "That's the passion I have for the game and I don't feel like I need to change anything."

Lawrie, born and raised in Canada, is in his first full season in the majors. Miller became part of the MLB umpiring staff in 1999.

The trouble began Tuesday night in the ninth inning in a game Toronto lost to Tampa Bay 4-3. Lawrie started toward first base after he thought a 3-1 pitch missed, but Miller called it a strike.

On a full-count pitch that he believed was ball four, Lawrie again headed toward first base. When Miller called strike three, Lawrie momentarily crouched in disbelief. Lawrie dropped his bat, gestured at Miller and shouted, and was ejected.

Lawrie then started toward Miller, wound up with his right arm and slammed down his helmet. It bounced at the umpire's feet and ricocheted up into him.

"That's a bit extreme," Miller said after the game.

As Miller walked off the field, he was hit in the shoulder by a drink thrown by a fan.

Both Blue Jays manager John Farrell and general manager Alex Anthopoulos said they would not try to curtail the exuberance of their infielder.

"He's an energetic player, we don't want him to lose that energy and that passion for the game, that will to compete and do whatever he has in his power at the moment to make an impact on the game," Farrell said.

Anthopoulos said he would "never begrudge a player for being upset and being a competitor."

"That's just part of the game," he said. "I don't fault anybody for that."

Anthopoulos approached Lawrie as he stood next to the cage during batting practice. The two spoke briefly, with Anthopoulos patting Lawrie on the shoulder several times before walking away.

Lawrie then returned to the clubhouse to speak with his manager and GM in Farrell's office before returning to the field to face the media as news of the suspension was made official.

Lawrie said he looked forward to the hearing as a chance to tell his side of the story.

"The only thing I regret is the helmet hitting him," Lawrie said. "I never meant to do that and it shows ... it took a bad hop and it hit him just totally by accident."

"I don't have any intentions of hurting anyone," he said. "I was just frustrated at the play at the time."

While conceding that Lawrie had made "a bad choice" in slamming down his helmet, Anthopoulos stressed Lawrie's lack of intent, and the misfortune that Miller happened to be struck.

"He knows he shouldn't throw his helmet, it goes without saying," Anthopoulos said. "Everyone knows he didn't throw it at anybody, it happened to bounce and hit someone. If he had turned a little to his right or a little to his left, I think you're probably not even involved in any type of suspension."

"It's not like you're recounting a story over the phone of, 'You won't believe what happened,'" he said.

Anthopoulos deflected the suggestion that Miller's strike calls were motivated by spite after Lawrie headed toward first base.

"I don't think the umpires would ever do their jobs that way," he said. "I think, from that standpoint, you can look back at the film, like we all can in hindsight and 20-20, and we can obviously see if they're balls or strikes. That's very easy to look at in hindsight. I'm not sitting back there behind the plate and I know how hard that job is so I would never accuse anybody of doing that."

Facebook boosts IPO size by 25 percent, could top $16 bil

By Olivia Oran and Alexei Oreskovic

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc will increase the size of its initial public offering by 25 percent, a source familiar with the matter said, and could raise as much as $16 billion as strong investor demand for a share of the No.1 social network trumps debate about the company's long-term potential to make money.

Those concerns over revenue growth were underscored earlier on Tuesday, when General Motors said it planned to pull out of advertising on Facebook.

Facebook, founded eight years ago by Mark Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm room, will add about 85 million shares to its IPO, floating about 422 million shares in an offering expected on Friday, the source told Reuters, declining to be identified because the information was confidential.

The expanded size, coupled with Facebook's recently announced plans to raise the IPO price range, would make Facebook the third-largest initial share sale in U.S. history after Visa Inc and GM. Facebook declined to comment on the increased IPO size, which was first reported by CNBC on Tuesday.

The social networking company is drumming up massive demand for the offering even as slowing revenue and user growth spur questions about the long-term Facebook story.

"This is much more a spectacle, a media event and a cultural moment than it is an IPO," said Max Wolff, an analyst at GreenCrest Capital. "This is not a game of models and fundamentals at this point."

GM's announcement, while ill-timed, should not seriously hurt Facebook's IPO reception for now as it may not be representative of advertisers' overall attitude, said Brian Wieser, an analyst with Pivotal Research Group. "The demand for the IPO probably won't be affected materially by this," he said, noting, however, there were probably a lot of calls between underwriters and investors following GM's announcement.

The IPO, Silicon Valley's largest, eclipses the roughly $2 billion debut by Google Inc in 2004.

Facebook raised the target price range to $34-$38 per share in response to strong demand, from $28-$35, according to a Tuesday filing. That would value the company at $93-$104 billion, rivaling the market value of Internet powerhouses such as Amazon.com Inc, and exceeding that of Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc combined.

The increased price range made it very unlikely that Facebook shares would double on their trading debut as they might have if the company had come out at the low end of its initial price range, Wolff said. He expects a first-day gain of about 10 percent.

"No rational person thought they were buying the stock for $28," said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Patcher, noting Facebook had traded as high as $44 in the secondary markets in recent months.

Facebook said in its latest filing that it arrived at the higher IPO price range after one week of marketing the offering - part of a cross-country roadshow in which CEO Zuckerberg has taken the stage to lay out his vision for the company's money-making potential and its top priorities.

The price range hike, coupled with strong results from Internet and social media players Groupon Inc and China's Renren Inc, contributed to a dotcom rally on Wall Street on Tuesday. Shares of Pandora Media Inc rose 10.3 percent, Zynga Inc was up 7.7 percent, Groupon climbed 3.7 percent and Renren gained 6.4 percent.

LONG-TERM GROWTH

Before the IPO size was increased, Facebook would have raised about $12.1 billion based on the midpoint price of $36 and the 337.4 million shares on offer originally.

At this midpoint, Facebook would be valued at roughly 27 times its 2011 revenue, or 99 times earnings. Google went public at a valuation of $23 billion, or 16 times its trailing revenue and 218 times earnings. Apple Inc went public in 1980 at a valuation of 25 times its revenue and 102 times earnings.

Facebook's IPO comes as some investors worry the company has not yet figured out a way to make money from a growing number of users who access the social network on mobile devices such as smartphones. Meanwhile, revenue growth from Facebook's online advertising business, which accounts for the bulk of its revenue, has slowed in recent months.

With some 900 million users, it had $1 billion in net income on revenue of $3.7 billion in 2011.

The company has also extended the time frame for its $1 billion acquisition of mobile app maker Instagram, projecting the deal would close this year instead of the second quarter as it previously indicated.

It provided no reasons, though a source familiar with the matter told Reuters last week that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has reached out to Google and Twitter as part of the agency's standard review for deals of that size.

Facebook is scheduled to price its shares on Thursday and begin trading on the Nasdaq on Friday. A host of Wall Street banks are underwriting the offering, with Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs serving as leads.

Acupuncture for Back Pain ? Health Hub from Cleveland Clinic

As an athlete, you train and condition your body to perform at its maximum ability but there are times when the body cries out in pain, either because of injury or overuse. Pain can hinder your ability to perform, and it?s especially important to seek help for back pain.

Treatment options for back pain vary, depending on the cause of the pain. Options range from conservative treatments like rest and ice to the most aggressive approach of surgery. In addition to conventional treatment options such as medication and physical therapy, acupuncture is gaining in popularity. It can be used as a stand-alone therapy or could be considered as an additional treatment in a multidisciplinary approach to managing back pain.

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to address many conditions in the body, especially pain. Modern medicine has begun looking more seriously at the ability of acupuncture to manage back pain. Data from one of the largest clinical trials performed in Germany was published in 2007. This study assessed more than 1,000 patients suffering from chronic low back pain and found that acupuncture improved low back pain for up to six months?twice the amount of time of conventional therapy.

A 2010 report in The Spine Journal did a systematic review of all of the clinical practice guidelines (the standard set of recommendations put forth by the medical community) for managing low back pain. The authors concluded that acupuncture should be included among treatment options to help manage low back pain?especially chronic low back pain. Additionally, acupuncture has received worldwide attention with the endorsement of its use for back pain management by the World Health Organization.

Patients receiving regular acupuncture treatments report little to no side effects that may be caused by medications. In fact, quite the opposite happens. Patients report ?side benefits? from acupuncture such as improved mood, sleep and overall quality of life.

For the athlete, acupuncture and its many side benefits can translate into less pain, quicker rehabilitation and overall improvement in athletic performance!

Jamie Starkey, LAc, is Lead Acupuncturist at Cleveland Clinic?s Center for Integrative Medicine which offers acupuncture with a focus on sports-related injuries, women?s health, oncology, acute/chronic pain management, stress-related disorders and acupuncture clinical research. To schedule an appointment with Jamie, please call 877.440.TEAM.

?I take great pride in being a clinician of Traditional Chinese Medicine,? says Starkey. ?I strive to help patients discover the ability their body has to heal itself when properly supported and brought back into a balanced state of health and wellness.?

Recommended treatment
After an initial evaluation, a suggested acupuncture ?course? is five to ten visits once a week for 45-60 minutes, and then a re-evaluation. Patients with chronic pain may require regular maintenance appointments every few weeks or months.
